January 2006
First, my good wishes to you for the New
Year.
What does 2006 hold for the field of leadership
development? Well, I for one am expecting some real
progress. For in 2004 and 2005 a lot of the old dead
wood - outworn theories, practices and assumptions - were
finally cleared away. Now there is a much sharper line
being drawn between what we know - or have rational grounds
for holding to be true - and all that semi-academic bullshit
that has plagued the field for so long. The Oxford Dictionary
defines bullshitting as 'to talk nonsense or as if one has
specialised knowledge.'
My prediction is that we shall see a drastic
reduction in the quantity of time and amount of money spent
on so-called leadership development, but a gradual improvement
in quality. For there are some definite signs that the
leading organisations in both the public and private sectors
are at last waking up to the fact that they need a strategy
for leadership development along the lines I advocated in
my two 2005 books. It promises to be an exciting and
interesting year.
Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with
others. .
